It’s all coming together.
WWDC22
Though a lot of expectations from WWDC22 from the XR end was a disappointment but we could clearly see the ecosystem coming together. Apple might feel still the hardware is not mature to the level of the basic experience that Apple strives for or it could be a production issue. But the XR creation pipeline and making other devices in the ecosystem work together are all the positive signs of the future of XR.

- Qualities of great AR experiences
- Bring your world into augmented reality — The content creation pipeline is essential to the journey to the spatial world. With object capture, Apple is making it easy for content creators to capture real-world objects and convert them into 3D objects to be consumed on XR experiences.
- USD Intro
- USD tools
- Vision Framework
- ARKit 6
- Room Plan — Its obvious the importance of Roomplan API in building XR experiences that could bridge the physical and virtual divide.
- Lockscreen — In AR contextually showing concise data or information would be a pattern to emerge, I might be overthinking but the new lockscreen and notification updates looked like a step towards it.
- Stage Manager — Its not just hopping between different metaverse in the future, it could also be hopping into different workspaces with relevant applications and journey, the stage manager has a lot of potential of interoperable experiences in future between devices and environment.
- Continuity Camera — XR is more about multimodality and ubiquitous computing the seamless transition between using your iPhone camera with mac made me curious about different experiences that we can build in the new world.
- Nearby Interaction — ARKit enhanced Nearby interaction announcements open lot of possibilities of new use cases.
These are some of the interesting updates from WWDC 22 that had an impact in XR experiences and products. Let me know if I have missed something that you found interesting.
